Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia is a modern educational and science institution. Since its foundation in the year 1937 more than 125.000 students have graduated. At present, STU consists of seven faculties that provide accredited programmes within the complex system of study.

Slovak University of Technology is research oriented university. During its existence, the university significantly contributed to development of scientific knowledge, enrichment and utilisation of scientific knowledge for the benefit of mankind. The university pursues research in all the areas in which university education is provided, thus in the areas of architecture, civil engineering, geodesy, cartography, chemical technologies, food processing, machinery, electrical engineering, electronics, informatics, information and communication technologies and applied physics, mathematics, economics, social science as well.

Research activities of the university are financially secured mainly by grant projects and state science and research programmes. The university also takes opportunity to join European science and technology cooperation programmes, searches for and gains additional financial resources from EU programmes, primarily from the Sixth, Seventh Framework Programme of EU.

Slovak University of Technology recognizes great potential in extension of communication networks supporting transfer of know-how gained from SERPENTE project to practice. The objective is to find appropriate way of commercialisation and economic valorisation for the ideas born at the university during SERPENTE implementation and let these ideas to contribute to development of entrepreneurial environment of sophisticated activities, thereby contribute to increase of prestige of Slovakia at the same time.

National center for research and application of renewable energy sources.

The Center's objective is to increase the research potential of the STU and the integration of scientific teams focused on new, environmentally acceptable renewable energy sources. The establishment of the center increases the quality of research and development and the innovation
potential of the STU as well as elimination of fragmented research at STU. This will also strengthen the competitiveness and success of the STU in international research.

The main subject of research in the field of renewable energy sources will be biomass and solar energy. The biomass will be center focus on the study of pyrolysis kinetics of thermal decomposition processes of polymers from renewable sources, with the consequent design of appropriate technological conditions for pyrolysis and gasification of selected polymeric materials and the analysis of pyrolysis products. In the field of solar energy will be emphasized optimization of solar tracking, power output conditioning, and accumulation of energy from plants based on renewable energy.

Specific objectives of the Center are:
Connect the top level research teams, by creating center and ensure its lasting sustainability. Provide the research teams in the center of excellence with top-class instrumentation: thereby achieving improvement and acquisition of necessary technology, without which the center of excellence, despite their good skills of human resources could not implement their project plans. This will complete the laboratory at 4 faculties of SUT involved in the project. Equip the center of excellence with cutting-edge information technology.
